What Is Sedation Dentistry? A Simple Guide for Nervous Dental Patients

what is sedation dentistry?Patient giving the thumbs up.

If you’ve landed on this page, I guess you’re looking for an answer to the question “What is dental sedation?”

This article explains how it works and whether it might make you feel more comfortable during your treatment, so let’s take a closer look ….

Not long ago, a patient came to see me at Mint Dental who was extremely nervous about having dental treatment.

Before we even looked at her teeth, she told me something I hear quite often.

I hate visiting the dentist. I’ve been putting this off for years.”

After a few minutes of talking, I asked her a simple question.

Have you ever heard of sedation dentistry?”

She replied that she had heard the term before, but like many patients, assumed it meant being completely knocked out for treatment.

That’s a very common misconception.

So we talked through the different options, how sedation works, and what patients can expect. By the end of the conversation, she looked noticeably relieved.

So, what is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of safe, controlled sedatives to help patients feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. Depending on the type of sedation used, patients may feel lightly relaxed or deeply calm, while still remaining awake and able to respond to their dentist.

Patients typically remain awake and able to respond to me, but they feel deeply relaxed and much less aware of the procedure. For many people, it turns what feels like a stressful experience into something far more manageable.

I often recommend sedation for patients who feel anxious about dental visits, have had difficult experiences in the past, or need longer procedures.

The goal is simple: To make dental treatment comfortable and stress-free.

Who Might Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

In my experience, sedation dentistry can make a huge difference for patients who:

  • Feel anxious about dental appointments
  • Have avoided the dentist for several years
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Need multiple treatments completed in one visit
  • Find it difficult to sit comfortably for long periods

I’ve seen many patients go from avoiding the dentist entirely to feeling confident about their visits once they know sedation is an option.

What Are My Sedation Options At Mint Dental?

When I discuss sedation dentistry with my Anchorage patients, I explain that there isn’t just one approach. We can choose the option that best fits the patient and the procedure.

Here are the three most common sedation methods I use and the ones that patients frequently ask me about.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide has been around for over 180 years and is still one of the most gentle and widely used forms of dental sedation. You may know it as ‘laughing gas’ or ‘happy gas’ because of the feelings of deep relaxation, euphoria, and a detachment from your surroundings.

The gas is delivered through a small mask placed over your nose. When the nitrous oxide is inhaled, it normally takes just a few minutes to take effect. The effects wear off just as quickly after the mask is removed.

Nitrous oxide doesn’t replace anaesthetic, but it does have mild pain-relieving abilities. So, when patients undergo treatment, they typically remember sitting in the chair but often feel too relaxed to care.

For those with mild dental anxiety, nitrous oxide is a great starting point.

Oral Sedation

Next up is oral sedation. This involves taking a prescribed tablet, normally a type of benzodiazepine, before your appointment. By the time you arrive at the practice, you’ll already be feeling relaxed.

Unlike nitrous oxide, where patients are easily aware of their surroundings, oral sedation is stronger, meaning patients feel more relaxed and usually more drowsy. Also, unlike laughing gas, people remember very little about the procedure afterward, which can be helpful for patients who feel particularly nervous.

Because the medication takes longer to wear off, I will advise you not to drive yourself home after treatment.

I normally recommend oral sedation for patients with moderate dental anxiety or for more invasive treatments that require multiple steps. These include treatments like tooth extractions, root canal therapy, or dental implant placement.

Conscious Sedation

For patients with significant dental anxiety or dental fear, we also offer conscious sedation. This type of sedation is normally delivered intravenously via a small cannula in the back of the hand.

IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide or oral sedation, but you remain awake. Patients undergoing IV sedation often describe a wall of tranquillity and calmness that descends over them, and while patients are still able to respond to treatment requests, most have little to no memory of the treatment afterward.

Throughout the appointment, my team and I carefully monitor you to ensure everything remains safe and comfortable.

IV sedation is often best suited to patients who need longer or more involved treatments, or those who have difficulty tolerating dental procedures or struggle with a strong gag reflex.

What Does Sedation Dentistry Feel Like?

Most patients say they simply feel very relaxed and at ease.

Depending on the type of sedation used, you may also feel:

  • Calm and comfortable
  • Slightly drowsy
  • Dream-like
  • Less aware of time passing
  • Much less concerned about what’s happening during treatment

One thing all forms of sedation have in common is that many people are surprised by how straightforward the experience feels.

In fact, the patient I mentioned earlier told me afterward that the appointment was “far easier than she expected.”

A Comfortable Way to Get the Care You Need

Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and it’s nothing to feel embarrassed about.

In my practice, I’ve seen firsthand how sedation dentistry can change the way patients experience dental care. People who once delayed treatment for years suddenly feel able to move forward with the care they need.

And that can make a real difference to both oral health and overall wellbeing.
