The Three Most Common Dental Problems

Despite taking the best care of your teeth, you still tend to end up making an appointment with your dentist to get your latest dental problem treated. This article will address the most common dental issues that people often face and how you can take measures to avoid them.  Also remember, you can get in touch with us at Mint Dental if you need help related to dental issues.

Bad Breath

Also known as halitosis, bad breath is perhaps the most common problem that people face. Even though there can be various reasons for having a bad breath, it is largely due to an underlying dental condition. According to studies 80% of bad breaths come from a medical problems like gum disease, cavities and dry mouth. Thus, to rule out the possibility of any of the aforementioned diseases, it is important that you get yourself thoroughly checked by a dentist.

To prevent from getting a bad breath, you need to take your hygiene seriously. Brushing after every meal, scraping your tongue daily and gargling with a medicated mouthwash are some of the ways you can avoid bad breath. There are also some natural ways to ensure you have fresh breath you can read about here.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, popularly known as cavities is another dental condition that most people have. It occurs when plaque mixes with remnants of leftover food (sugar and starch food particularly) on our teeth and dissolves the tooth enamel. The combination of plaque and leftover sugar and starch on your teeth produce a strong acid which is able to dissolve the tooth enamel, thereby making space for the bacteria which causes cavity.

Again, preventive measures for tooth decay include regular cleansing and flossing of your mouth. However, if the cavity is formed then you need to get it treated by a dentist. Depending upon the extent of cavity, it will be treated by filling or a root canal.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a type of  infection that is most common among adults. Major causes of gum disease are bad oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes and genetic susceptibility. Common symptoms are immense pain, bleeding and swelling in gums.

There are two stages of gum disease, periodontitis, which is the most severe stage, and gingivitis, which is a much milder form and typically exists among teenagers. The former can be extremely hazardous as the bacteria can be inhaled which puts your heart and lung at a greater risk.

It is important to get yourself examined by the dentist if you are facing symptoms indicating gum disease so that the dentist can prevent it from progressing otherwise you may require surgery. Taking care of your oral hygiene diligently and regular appointments to the dentist can prevent it from developing.
